Sketching values

Exemples of the kind of sketches I do when not painting in colour. Theses are not meant to be finished pieces nor perfect drawings. These are meant to be studies of Black and white values from the simplest to more "complex" forms. Decreasing values from a photographic image to only 2, maybe 3 values is not an easy task and is a very good exercice for the eye. It also is essential to understand values if you wanna improve into getting more realistic renderings in your pantings (Google random and more personnal pictures used here, yes that's me riding on the moon below :))

Exercice

Amazing what you can come up with using Sketchup. I've been practicing some tutorials recently and this exercice below is the result from one of them.

The Shrimpmaid

I don't think that does mean a thing in english, does it? Not a mermaid but a shrimpmaid. First painting done on my new Cintiq 22HD tablet. I will write a quick review about it soon enough, that can interest someone out there to read about my thoughts for color Gamut etc...

The Crow and the Fox

I was walking in Paris like a month ago and fell in love with an anonymous painting inspired by the famous Jean de La Fontaine's fable (that's what the owner of the painting told me anyway).
Since then, I've had in mind to do my own version of the fable as foxes were one of my favorite animals when I was a kid. I've finally found the time this morning to paint it at last, 'hope you guys dig it ! I've used the help of a wonderful photo found on the internet as reference for the the fox's head but cannot remember where I got it from though, so thanx to the author if he sees this, I'll be happy to credit him or her.

Hell Breaks Loose, a few steps

Some screen shots saved from the making of "Hell breaks loose".
It looks pretty obvious that the original sketch values has nothing "much" to do with  the final illustration. I initially thought of a guy smoothly walking towards some monster eggs lit by daylight, set in an abandoned  tube station, isn't that obvious? ;) Anyway, I kept the composition and decided to go the route you know by now.

Hell breaks loose!

Still practicing my 3D skills, this is my latest one, I will eventually post a few work in progress nails today.

Bram Stoker's Dracula

As close as I could get from the original novel! Because I've always had a soft spot for the Bela Lugosi film (though far from being the best film), I've added a black and white version too. There's a picture in progress on my facebook page, if you are interested. And don't forget to follow me there too, that would be very appreciated ;).

"This is Halloween, Halloween, Halloween"

Well, I couldn't do my usual Halloween horror movies Marathon this year, so I had to paint something, didn't I? Though I'm 3 days late, don't mind if I did :)

Lucca Games and Comics 2014 (the return)

Hi everyone, I just got back from Lucca (in Italy) for one of the biggest Comics and games con ever, well, apparently one of the two biggest if not the biggest in the world as I was told! Let me tell you that was huge. This magnificient medieval city gives itself completely to the event, loads of people walking around in full cosplay, concerts, celebrities etc..., a place to be to be believed.
This was one hell of an experience signing and sketching for the nice and passionnate people there buying the book from the Savage worlds italian team. (great, great guys!)
Anyway, here are a few shots of your host from the event, I'll share some more on my facebook page if you wanna see, go and have a look :).

The Great Flood

Maybe you'll be interested to see the basic 3D scene that is the foundation of this illustration. As you can see, this is a loose interpretation of the basic image :)

Step by step Savage worlds/Deadlands

"Deadlands/Savage Worlds" COVER

Been working with Savage Worlds Italia for a few weeks now . I'm allowed today to show you the cover (front /edge/back) of the future installment of this famous role playing game. The eye of the foreground dinosaur is the edge of the cover. Spaghetti western, vampires, dinosaurs and pyramids, how cool is that?! Maybe I'll be able to show you the other illustrations in the next few weeks as well as a work in progress process, who knows ...

Beast of the Gevaudan/before striking

Fresh out from the oven, this one has more work put into it compared to the last one. Poor guys, I love this mystery, I actually did a speed painting representing the hunt for the beast a few years ago here

The swallows

Long time since I have painted something for myself (2 months and a half actually) so I've decided to do this quicky yesterday, hoping you'll enjoy it!

Sketch polishing

Hi guys, long time no see. Here is a polishing I made this morning based on one rough sketch I drew a few months ago for a potential client. Because he never bothered coming back to me, I've finally decided to have fun with it to warm up my hand and see what could have been. Summer will be slow of personnel works in here but soon I'll be able to produce a lot more for sure :).

YETI

An idea that kept popping up in my head for the last couple of days so I had to take a break from my other drawing duties of the moment and get rid of that yeti stuff :).

Sherlock Holmes Arabian nights

Hi guys, I'll probably won't be posting anything new for the next few weeks as I'll be hard working on environnemental concept arts for a cool sci-fi project. Maybe will I be able to post some of theses concepts anytime soon. Anyway, hope you enjoy what looks like my last "human" for some time then.... :)

Rasputin (ra ra)

Here's a 20mn sketch I did a few days ago in a train. It's drawn using a calligraphy brush, a black marker in very bad shape and some correcting fluid.

Jonathan Harker

This is an old speed drawing I made a few years back thinking I could do something with this someday. Well, this is it, and I want to thank this wonderful artist Malo (http://malosart.blogspot.fr/) because his color and light palette inspires me each time I see his art.
